Amanda always slays skin care and eyebrows! I’ve been going to her for a few months for Lumenis laser treatments for acne scars and the difference is night and day. Even though the main focus is smoothing deep acne scars another welcome side effect is that my skin is tighter and more snatched. Down the line I’ll probably do the laser for more skin rejuvenation, stretch marks, and hair removal. I learned from Amanda it also does tattoo removal. The Obagi skin care products also slap—slaps the pores and wrinkles away. I’ve also done the Diamond facial for deep pore cleansing which was also amazing. 10/10 will recommend to anyone who will listen. The photos are of my first and fourth session.

After doing research to find a salon that could achieve what I wanted, I booked an appointment here for a bleach and short, edgy cut. Not so. Unfortunately, the stylist I selected had a schedule conflict. Because I live outside of Philadelphia and had already arranged transportation, I could not reschedule. Upon the original stylist’s highly endorsed recommendation, I booked with another stylist. This stylist was very sweet, but a novice. From her first recommendation to wash my hair prior to bleaching, I felt there might be a problem. I have been getting my hair done in a similar style for more than a decade in salons from New York to Miami to Rome. So, I spoke up. She assured me that this was what the bleach product recommended. She double-bleached all of my hair twice, not just the roots. My scalp was scorched and remained tender and pink for a week.Then, she attempted to do a highly textured short style. It didn’t go well. She had to get the owner, who finished the cut, explaining that the stylist was fairly new. The cut was ok but it has not grown in well since then. Normally, my hair appointments are 2-2.5 hours. I was there 4 hours. Initially, I paid because my ride was waiting. However, once I was home, I contacted my credit card company, as well as the owner. She gave me a partial refund but did not really accept responsibility. I had tipped the stylist and treated her kindly because she was young and new. The owner asked why since I was dissatisfied. I said it was the right thing to do. This was my worst salon experience ever.

Subculture is an amazing studio and they offer a huge variety of services. As soon as you walk in, the staff is always so happy to see you and they will always treat you like an old friend. Their pricing is way more reasonable than any other salon/spa I've been to in the city, and it's worth the commute even if you don't live in the neighborhood. Its located right off of South Street, so it makes for the perfect opportunity to wander around or get some lunch after an appointment, which is always a bonus! I've been going to Amanda to get my eyebrows done for at least 5 years now, and she never disappoints. She recently made the move to Subculture, and I had to follow her because no one does it like she can! She is my skincare guru as well and I love every facial I've gotten with her. Every girl out there knows how hard it is to find someone you trust enough to work on your face, and I cannot recommend her enough! I'd be lost without her!

I recently visited Subculture for the first time, and it was absolutely wonderful. Brett was my stylist and I really love the highlights he gave me. I really appreciated how meticulous he was in ensuring the highlights were distributed consistently. I provided a reference picture for what I wanted, and I was amazed by how skillfully Brett was able to replicate it. Thank you Brett and Suzi!

I have been going to Suzi at Subculture for over 3 years now. I have gotten bleach-outs for the last 14 years and have jumped around to quite a few salons in NYC & Philly, but have never felt so comfortable in a salon as I do at Subculture. Suzi takes impeccable care of my hair with 0 noticeable breakage. The time, care, and attention she gives to my hair is so appreciated and I leave feeling so happy with how it looks every single time. I truly feel like I’m spending time with my friend when I get my hair done- I can’t say enough good things!

I’ve been here twice now, once with Haley for a cut three weeks ago and last week with Brett for a color. Both were super friendly when I got there greeting me and offering a water, checking in with me if they were ready or needed a few minutes (I arrived early). Haley was great! Good discussion before getting started about what I wanted from the haircut, if we were addressing my facial hair which was a little untamed and if I needed a wash before we started. It felt very natural and not forced like a friend making sure you got everything you needed during the visit! While I was there I saw a few stylist had dyed hair and another client was getting their hair dyed & raving about the service/quality of the work. I knew I had to return! I booked with Brett the following week for a dye job to a beautiful “brat green”, he lifted and dyed my hair after some discussion of what I wanted for the color. He made the experience which tends to be a longer visit than a regular cut very enjoyable with good conversation. The vibes of the staff & clients were very uplifting and positive both times I was there! Lastly, let us not forget the studio itself is very cute with local artwork for purchase that helps set the vibe as well. Will be returning & recommending to anyone looking!

I’ve been letting my hair grow for the better part of a year but i needed a slight trim. I’m typically a nervous person when it comes to my hair but the stylist Brett helped guide me to what kind of trim would work the best, and the atmosphere of the salon was calm and relaxing. I was very happy with my haircut and will be back there for any hair needs!

Sam has been doing my lash lift and tint for a couple years now, love her. She's thorough and rad! The whole salon is filled with talented people, and the owner Ashley is great. Awesome spot to get your aesthetic needs tended to!

Haley is a very knowledgeable and patient / flexible hairstylist! I had never been to this salon before. I'm very happy that I happened to have Haley for my appointment. My hair presented a variety of challenges, as it's curly, coarse, and going gray. Haley managed all of these issues with aplomb. I got response from a friend that I "look 10 years younger." And that person has known me for decades so he was making a true statement! The haircut and one-process color (which actually included four different blended tones of brunette) cost only $110 for a session lasting almost 3 hours (time was extended by my mobility challenges.) This was a very reasonable price given that the location was like a mile from Center City, Philly and all its associated high costs of operating a business. The price was comparable to a visit to a SuperCuts in Plantation, FL for a haircut and color in Feb '23! Really, you can't beat that! Highly recommended! My only caveat: this is not a handicapped -accessible business and the wheelchair icon should be removed from this entry in the Google Maps app. There IS a very long ramp from the street level to the basement level. However, to get to Subculture's location in the subbasement, you have to descend 3 brick steps, that have NO RAILING. The staff were very apologetic. I learned from them that the landlord is saying as it's an historic building, nothing can be modified, including adding a railing. Given that such a modification would be internal, I think that response seems like hogwash. I just wish Google would remove the wheelchair icon from this entry as it's misleading.

I love this place!! I’ve gotten a great haircut, but go there now for my skin care! Their facials are amazing and relaxing. I really appreciate that they’re more of a medspa and offer quality advice and recommendations. I find their pricing to be fair and their spa is super welcoming and warm!

I highly recommend Emilie for haircut & coloring! I got a long layered haircut and a full balayage with purple & magenta coloring. The haircut was SO good - I’ve been to many hair stylists and never saw one before that gave me such a great cut on my first visit. And Emilie’s a deeply skilled artist in hair coloring. This was my first time ever dying my hair, and I don’t have the $$ to do this regularly, so I had lots of questions about coloring styles & how to make sure it fades into something I’ll still love. Emilie very patiently walked me through the options, and together we came up with a coloring style that I loved even more than what I’d imagined on my own. Two months later, I love the way the colors have faded (Emilie helped me choose colors based on this), and the cut still looks gorgeous. Emilie turned my hair into a piece of art. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Emilie is amazing, I really thought I was stuck waiting for my hair to grow out and I'd just have to grit my teeth through it; I ended up walking out with a style that I freaking love. She was so fun to hang out with and she's clearly an expert at her craft. The salon is comfortable, has great music and everyone here has A+ vibes. I had a great time here and my hair looks awesome. I had a wonderful experience at Subculture with Drew McKewon (@drew.mchue) ! Drew has been cutting my hair for years and when I wanted to first dip my toes into coloring it he's the only person I would trust. After trying more subtle color changes we recently did a BRIGHT pop of pink and I am obsessed. We also did a major chop and I couldn't be more thrilled with the results. 10/10 recommend!

Went and got my hair done for my birthday a gift from the hubby he wanted to make it special and boy was it special the salon was beautiful the staff was so friendly cheerful and upbeat. My stylist took the time to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted and she did a great job. I’ll be going back it was an all around great experience

I had a wonderful experience at Subculture with Sarah Bering!! I went in to have my hair dyed pink and purple, and didn’t have a specific vision for it so I let Sarah use her creative freedom and it turned out SO PERFECT!! Sarah was so professional, friendly, and considerate of my needs, and I’ve gotten compliments on my hair every single day since. So extremely happy with the service and the result! Sarah is the best!!

Suzi was BEYOND accommodating, fit me into her schedule quickly, and was super meticulous in fixing my issue. Was so welcoming, offered drinks, great conversation. I’ve had my hair cut by Sarah Bering for years now, she’s always professional and kind. Very knowledgeable and fast. Always has something nice to say and advice for hair care. I’ve dyed my hair a hundred colors and Sarah got me to the color I wanted every time! She even had a hair influencer comment on the inspiration photo and said my hair looked just like hers!! Can’t wait for my next haircut!

Suzi is knows how to make me cooler than I am. She even takes care of my teenage kids who also are cooler than I am. Everyone is friendly, location can't be beat, and online scheduling is easy. Highly recommend!
